Earthquake Near Campobasso On Thursday October 31, 2002 at 11:30am there was a 5.9 earthquake near Campobasso. We promptly called a resident in Castropignano on her cell phone and everybody is ok. If you want to call Castropignano try to call on their cell phones because telephone lines may be out of order. It was a strong wave all over central and southern Italy: Molise Puglia, Campania, Calabria and Sicilia. CNN UPDATE: November 1, 2002 @ 9:50am Western Time A second strong earthquake Friday's aftershock -- which measured 5.8 -- struck just after 4 p.m. and sent sobbing families streaming into the streets in panic just as they were beginning the grim task of identifying the bodies of the children killed who died Thursday. In all, 29 people -- 26 of them between the ages of 3 and 10 -- lost their lives. Rescuers saved 35 children from the rubble of their two-story school. Anche a Campobasso la scossa è stata molto forte, ma senza conseguenze. Notizie drammatiche provengono da S.Giuliano di Puglie (provincia di Campobasso), dove è crollato il solaio di una scuola materna. Sono in corso le operazioni di soccorso, che hanno consentito di liberare parte dei bambini rimasti sotto le macerie e un’insegnante.
